Dear Vincent,

I’ve just about completed this charcoal drawing (click on images below) from the photograph you chose of Andrew. The purpose of this drawing is two fold:

1. to demonstrate for your critique and approval the likeness that I’ve achieved and the composition of the whole painting, and

2. to help me become familiar with Andrew’s features when I do the final painting.

Please review the images of the drawing of Andrew (I’ve included close-ups also) and let me know of any changes you would like in the likeness and/or the composition.

Please don’t hesitate to give me your feelings on the likeness; as I’ve never met Andrew and can only go by the static photographs, only you can tell me if I’m capturing the life and essence of little Andrew. My thoughts right now are that the cheeks may need to be a bit fuller and maybe you would want a bit of a smile to the lips – not so serious.

Please look also at image e. This is a painterly computer effect that I did to the drawing to give you a better idea of the portrait in paint. My style of work falls somewhere between the finish of the drawing and the looseness of this sample.
